Apostle Ndura Waruinge reveals how Mungiki used to punish members who practiced infidelity

Crusade For Christ Ministries preacher Apostle Ndura Waruinge has disclosed that the Mungiki sect, in which he once held a senior position, operated under extremely rigid internal rules that imposed harsh disciplinary consequences for members accused of infidelity.
Speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Friday, December 5, 2025, Waruinge said members were forbidden from engaging in secret affairs, and anyone found with a woman who was not his wife or officially recognised partner faced punishment that could include 25 strokes of the cane.
“When I was in Mungiki, I had a wife, but I was operating like a king, and you know a king cannot operate with just one wife. What was not allowed in Mungiki was having a side chick or an affair outside your marriage,” the Apostle shared.
He disclosed that he himself once received such punishment during his time in the organisation, despite being a senior figure.
“For example, if I was married and wanted to take another wife, I had to make sure my first wife knew and consented to the arrangement. If someone was ever caught with a woman they had not married, they were given 25 strokes of the cane,” he said.

He added that even the group’s top leadership was not exempt from the disciplinary system.
According to him, former leader Maina Njenga had at one point been subjected to 75 strokes of the cane for conduct the group considered a violation of its rules, underscoring how rigidly the movement enforced its internal discipline.
“I was once beaten myself. Even Maina Njenga was given 75 strokes of the cane for misbehaving in matters of infidelity. It was a very strict rule, and everyone faced the consequences, no matter their rank in Mungiki,” Waruinge added.
Apostle Waruinge also explained that Mungiki maintained other strict lifestyle rules.
He said members were prohibited from consuming alcohol or smoking, although the organisation permitted the use of certain substances like bhang that it considered culturally acceptable at the time.
Theft, deception, or financial exploitation of fellow members was also banned. According to him, breaches related to dishonesty or stealing carried even heavier penalties, which could include up to 100 strokes of the cane.
“We were also not allowed to drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, though bhang was permitted. Theft, swindling, or robbing other members was strictly forbidden and punishable with 100 strokes of the cane,” the Apostle shared.
