Anthony Joshua issues first public update after fatal car crash in Nigeria

Anthony Joshua has issued his first public update following a car crash in Nigeria that injured him and claimed the lives of two close friends and team members.

Sina Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, and Latif Ayodele, also known as Latz, who was one of his trainers, died after the vehicle they were travelling in struck a stationary truck on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital before being discharged on Wednesday. He has since returned to the UK ahead of the funerals for Ghami and Ayodele.

In a post on Instagram on Sunday, December 4, 2025, Joshua shared two images, including one of him sitting with his mother and three other women, one of whom held a photograph of Ghami.

The boxer captioned the post: “My Brother’s Keeper.” The pictures capture a moment of private mourning as friends, family and fans reflect on the loss.

On Friday, Ogun State Police confirmed that Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was driving the car with Joshua as a passenger, had been charged at Sagamu Magistrates’ Court over the crash.

Prosecutors brought four counts against him, including dangerous and reckless driving, driving without due care and attention, causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid licence. The case has been adjourned to January 20, and Kayode was granted bail set at five million naira.

The accident occurred just days after Joshua’s sixth‑round knockout win over YouTuber‑turned‑boxer Jake Paul in Miami in December.

Local reports say the SUV was travelling at speed and lost control before colliding with the stationary truck, a scenario authorities are continuing to investigate.

The crash has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from the global boxing community, with peers and rivals alike offering condolences.
