Celebrated Ugandan comedienne Anne Kansiime has opened up about a deeply personal part of her life, paying her own dowry and navigating the expectations of marriage.

Speaking during a candid interview with Wonder Jr in an episode aired on Monday, April 6, 2026, Kansiime revealed that she had never actually become a wife in the traditional sense.

“I have never become a wife ever. I actually accused myself so much, paid my own dowry and convinced the whole world and the man himself that we were married,” Kansiime revealed.

“So if you come to my home and they tell you what dowry to pay and you do not pay it, am I your wife?”

Reasons for dowry payment

Kansiime explained how she introduced her then-partner to her parents, who welcomed him and requested a dowry. However, when he failed to pay, she took matters into her own hands.

“I introduced him to my parents, who accepted him and asked him to bring a dowry, which he didn’t bring,” she explained.

“They overasked for it, and I paid it myself. When I paid, he forgot about it, I forgot about it, and we moved on with life.”

Pressure to build a family

The experience stayed with her, especially when she reached the age of 30 and began trying to have a child.

“It was later, when I was 30, that I was trying to have a child, that I wondered why God wasn’t letting me get pregnant. That makes you think deeper. The God who has given me all these wonderful things without asking is the same God who refused to give me a child.” Kansiime recalled.

The comedienne also shared her desire to be like her parents, adding that at that time she was badly in need of a child.

“I wanted to be like my parents; I didn’t want to be the person who gets busy with so many people, so when I met him, I really wanted to make it work. I really wanted a child so badly,” she stated.

It is worth noting that Anne Kansiime was married to Gerald Ojok for four years before the relationship ended around 2017.

She then fell in love again with a fellow artist, Skylanta, in 2018, with whom she had a child.
