Police seize 260L of illicit brew in Meru crackdown

Police in Meru County have arrested a person of interest in possession of illicit brew and other narcotic drugs.

In an X post on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, the police said the arrest followed a well-coordinated operation aimed at taming drug trafficking in the residential areas in Meru.

 “A multi-agency security team, consisting of officers from the National Police Service based at Mulika Police Station and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), today on 16th September 2025, conducted a successful operation targeting illicit brews, narcotic drugs, and illegal gambling within Kang’ethia village,” the police X statement posted on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, read in part.

“The team arrested one suspect found in possession of 260 litres of Muna and apparatus used in the manufacture of illicit alcohol.”

The incident comes as the government, in collaboration with agencies such as the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has vowed a crackdown against drug abuse, especially among the youth and increasing crime rates.

Meru’s arrest also comes days after police in Nairobi seized more than 2,000 litres of muratina in a major operation targeting the illicit brew trade in Makadara Sub-County.

According to a statement shared by the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was carried out on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in the Lunga Lunga area. Officers from the Nairobi Region stormed a premises suspected of being used for the production and distribution of the traditional brew.

“Today, 9th September 2025, officers from the Nairobi Region conducted a major operation targeting the illicit brew trade in the Lunga Lunga area of Makadara Sub-County,” the statement read in part.

During the raid, they recovered and destroyed over 2,000 litres of muratina and seized an additional 100 litres that were preserved as evidence. Other items believed to be linked to the illegal business were also taken away.

“During the raid, officers recovered and destroyed more than 2,000 litres of muratina. They also seized a further 100 litres of the illicit drink and other items, which were secured as evidence,” the authorities revealed.
