Police in Murang’a County have arrested five persons of interest in the war on illicit brew.

Through a press statement released by the National Police Service (NPS) on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the officers confirmed the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of 20 litres of chang’aa during an operation in Kahaini Village.

The statement said the operation was carried out by officers from Ng’araria Police Station working together with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).

The team raided a quarry site near River Thika after receiving information about ongoing illegal alcohol activities.

The team quickly moved in and arrested them before they could escape. Twenty litres of the illicit brew were found at the scene and were taken as evidence.

The five suspects are currently being held at Ng’araria Police Station as investigations continue. Police said they will be taken to court once the necessary processing is complete.

The NPS also confirmed that the recovered brew has been kept safely as part of the evidence in the case.

Crackdown on illicit alcohol continues

Residents of Kahaini have for a long time raised complaints about illegal alcohol brewing and its effect on young people in the area.

Police say such operations are part of ongoing efforts to make the community safe and discourage the sale and use of illegal liquor.

The National Police Service said it remains firm in its promise to fight the production and sale of chang’aa and other banned drinks.

It added that more crackdowns are planned in other parts of Murang’a and neighbouring counties.

“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to tackling the menace of narcotics and illicit alcohol,” part of the statement read.

Police are calling on the public to share any information that can help stop the spread of illegal alcohol, warning that anyone found involved will face the law.
