Police nab 3, recover elephant tusks in Kerugoya
By William Muthama, September 8, 2025Police have nabbed three persons of interest in connection with illegal wildlife activities in Kerugoya township, Kirinyaga County, following a multi-agency operation involving the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Speaking on Monday, September 8, 2025 through their X page, the NPS confirmed that the three individuals were found in possession of elephant tusks and have been placed in custody pending arraignment in court.
“The National Police Service reiterates that wildlife crimes are serious offences that threaten the survival of endangered species and compromise Kenya’s conservation legacy,” the statement read.

Authorities emphasised that protecting endangered species is a top priority, and wildlife criminals will be pursued with all available legal measures.

Collaborative security efforts
The NPS highlighted the importance of teamwork in addressing wildlife crime.
“The Service commends the collaborative efforts of the law enforcement agencies in safeguarding wildlife and assures the public of its continued vigilance in dismantling criminal networks engaged in trophy trafficking,” the statement said.
Officers noted that coordinated operations between different agencies are essential to prevent illegal hunting, trafficking, and the exploitation of Kenya’s wildlife resources.

Members of the public were also urged to actively support conservation and security efforts.
“Members of the public are urged to support security and conservation efforts by sharing timely information through the toll-free numbers ”, the statement read.
The NPS stressed that community vigilance is critical to combating wildlife crime and ensuring endangered species are protected.
