The National Police Service (NPS) has apprehended a person of interest along Watiti Roadblock in Wajir County, ferrying at least 3 kg of bhang, an illegal substance in Kenya.

According to a report on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the man was apprehended on Monday, August 4, 2025. This was after a member of the public tipped off the officers about a suspicious individual on a motorcycle who appeared hesitant to cross the police barrier.

“On Monday, 4th August 2025, police officers manning the Watiti Roadblock acted swiftly on intelligence received from a vigilant member of the public, who reported a suspicious individual on a motorbike who appeared hesitant to cross the police barrier,” the National Police Service said.

In the statement, the detectives indicated that the person of interest tried to beat their dragnet, but he was outwitted and handcuffed.

“A few minutes later, the described motorbike approached the roadblock. The rider attempted to evade the spikes but was promptly stopped by officers on duty,” NPS said.

Events that led to his arrest

Police service further added that upon his swift move by police officers, the rider, who was carrying a blue safari bag strapped to his back, was asked to open the bag, where they discovered the bhang weighing approximately 3 kilograms.

“The rider, carrying a blue safari bag strapped to his back, was subjected to a search. Upon opening the bag, officers discovered a dried plant material suspected to be cannabis sativa, weighing approximately 3 kilograms,” NPS explained.

In addition, just after the rider was apprehended, according to the National Police Service report, he was escorted to Bute Police Station, where he was placed in custody.

“The suspect was immediately arrested and escorted to Bute Police Station, where he was placed in custody,” NPS said.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service has revealed that the person of interest is expected to appear in court.

NPS has reaffirmed its steadfast and commitment to combating the trafficking and abuse of narcotics and psychotropic substances across the country.
