Police achieve another milestone in crackdown against illegal firearms
Police officers in Laikipia County have received one illegal firearm voluntarily surrendered in the Louniek area of Kirima Sub-County.
In a statement by the National Police Service on X on Saturday, November 29, 2025, the police confirmed that the surrender highlights the community’s growing confidence in the ongoing peace and disarmament initiatives led by the government.
“Police in Laikipia County have received an illegally held firearm that was voluntarily surrendered in the Louniek area of Kirima Sub-County. The surrender highlights the community’s growing confidence in the ongoing peace and disarmament initiatives led by the government,” NPS said.

The officers have further confirmed that the surrendered weapon was an AK-47 rifle with one empty magazine and has hence been placed in safe custody at Olmoran Police Station pending further administrative action.
Likewise, the National Police Service, while detailing the number of surrenders done by the community, confirmed that 10 illegal firearms have so far been recovered from Kirima Sub-County.
“The surrendered weapon, an AK-47 rifle with one empty magazine, has been placed in safe custody at Olmoran Police Station pending further administrative action. This latest surrender contributes to the ongoing progress in Kirima Sub-County, where a total of 10 illegal firearms have now been voluntarily surrendered,” NPS added.

Similarly, the officers noted the recovered firearms included nine AK-47 rifles, one carbine rifle, 56 rounds of ammunition, 13 magazines, and one bayonet.
“These include nine AK-47 rifles, one carbine rifle, 56 rounds of ammunition, 13 magazines, and one bayonet, reflecting the sustained impact of collaborative security efforts in the region,” NPS added.
“The National Police Service commends the cooperation of local leaders and community members, whose continued support is vital to enhancing regional security and promoting peaceful coexistence. Members of the public are encouraged to share any information that may aid in the further recovery of illegal firearms and strengthen community safety,” NPS said.

Baringo County
This comes just weeks after police in Baringo County also received two illegal firearms that were voluntarily surrendered by members of the public on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in Tangulbei, within Tiaty East Sub-County.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the surrender marks continued progress in the government’s peace and disarmament efforts across the North Rift region, where illegal possession of firearms has long fuelled insecurity and inter-communal conflict.

In a statement on Thursday, November 13, 2025, NPS commended the cooperation of local leaders and residents for their growing trust and participation in peacebuilding initiatives.
“The voluntary surrender reflects continued public goodwill and trust in the ongoing government-led peace and disarmament initiatives across the North Rift region,” the statement read in part.
