Person of interest escapes as police seize over 2K litres of muratina

Police in Nairobi have seized more than 2,000 litres of muratina in a major operation targeting the illicit brew trade in Makadara Sub-County.
According to a statement shared by the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was carried out on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in the Lunga Lunga area. Officers from the Nairobi Region stormed a premises suspected of being used for the production and distribution of the traditional brew.
“Today, 9th September 2025, officers from the Nairobi Region conducted a major operation targeting the illicit brew trade in the Lunga Lunga area of Makadara Sub-County,” the statement read in part.
During the raid, they recovered and destroyed over 2,000 litres of muratina and seized an additional 100 litres that were preserved as evidence. Other items believed to be linked to the illegal business were also taken away.
“During the raid, officers recovered and destroyed more than 2,000 litres of muratina. They also seized a further 100 litres of the illicit drink and other items, which were secured as evidence,” the authorities revealed.

According to the authorities, the raid was part of an ongoing crackdown on illicit alcohol that has continued to affect families and communities across the country. Police said they are pursuing a person of interest believed to be behind the illegal operation.
Authorities emphasised that the fight against illicit alcohol is a priority due to the health risks it poses and the social harm it causes. They warned that those engaging in the production, sale, or consumption of the brews would face firm legal action.
“Police are currently pursuing a suspect in connection with the illicit trade. The National Police Service sternly warns individuals involved in the production, sale, and consumption of illicit brews that such criminal activities will not be tolerated and will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

Separate raid
This comes a week after Eldoret police impounded a vehicle carrying illicit brew.
NPS said on Monday, 1 September 2025, that officers, acting on a tip-off, recovered 500 litres of chang’aa and seized the vehicle.
The operation was led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Eldoret Police Station. Acting on intelligence, officers stopped a Toyota Corolla, registration withheld, in the Asis area.
“Today, 1 September 2025, police officers from Eldoret Police Station, who the OCS led, while on patrol within the city, received a tip-off regarding a motor vehicle suspected to be transporting chang’aa. Acting on the information, the officers mounted a search operation and intercepted the vehicle in the Asis area. Upon searching, they discovered five hundred (500) litres of chang’aa, which was packed in polythene pouches and plastic bottles,” the NPS statement read in parts.
