NPS: Manhunt underway after armed man targets 16-year-old girl
Police in Turkana County, acting on a tip-off from members of the public, have launched a manhunt for a man linked to the abduction of a 16-year-old girl while they recovered an AK-47 firearm.
In a statement released on Monday, September 8, 2025, the National Police Service revealed that the operation was conducted by police from Lorugum Police Station following an alert by the members of the public concerning an armed person of interest from the Kaapus location.
Police have further revealed that the key person of interest was armed and had stormed a home demanding to forcibly take away a 16-year-old girl.
“Acting on a tip-off from members of the public concerning an armed and dangerous suspect from Kaapus location who had stormed a home and demanded to forcibly take away a 16-year-old girl, a team of officers from Lorugum Police Station, led by the OCS, responded swiftly,” NPS said.
According to the statement, the National Police Service has revealed that the team successfully recovered an AK-47 firearm loaded with at least six rounds of ammunition and one spent cartridge.

However, police have revealed that the key person of interest managed to escape. The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.
“The team successfully recovered an AK-47 firearm loaded with six rounds of ammunition and one spent cartridge. The suspect, however, managed to escape. A manhunt is ongoing to apprehend him so he may face the relevant charges in court,” NPS said.

On the other hand, the Police, while commending members of the public for their unwavering cooperation with security agencies, noted that the recovered firearm has been secured as an exhibit.
“The recovered exhibit has been secured. National Police Service commends members of the public for their unwavering cooperation with security agencies and urges them to continue sharing information at their nearest police post or station,” NPS noted.
Police issue ultimatum in Turkana
The manhunt follow the National Police Service has issuance of a one-week ultimatum to West Pokot and Turkana residents to surrender illegal firearms in a fight against banditry and insecurity along the inter-county border.
The police issued the stern warning following a high-level joint meeting by County Security Committees from Turkana and West Pokot Counties in Kainuk on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
“County Security Committees from Turkana and West Pokot Counties convened a high-level joint meeting in Kainuk on Thursday to deliberate on the persistent insecurity along the inter-county border,” NPS said.
According to a statement released by the National Police Service on Friday, August 29, 2025, the discussion centred on cross-border banditry, as well as the proliferation of illegal firearms.
Likewise, NPS noted emerging threats that are undermining peace within the two border counties despite the ongoing Maliza Uhalifu initiative.
