Locals in fear over resurgence of criminal gang in Nakuru after 1 killed

Following the launch of the Jukwa la Usalama report highlighting rising cases of criminal gangs, residents of Flamingo Estate in Nakuru Town East are living in fear after a young man was killed by a suspected criminal gang.
Speaking in Flamingo on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Sarah Owendi, mother of Jackson Marucha, said that he was brutally killed by members of a criminal gang who were his friends before he left the group.
She said that her son was stabbed severely by the members after he was picked up before being dumped near the sewage plant.
“My son had told me that his phone had gotten lost and requested me to replace the phone, but I learned later that it had actually been stolen by the gang, and they used the phone to bait him before taking his life in a brutal manner,” she said.

Davin Marucha, her sister, said that they received a call to pick up his body from the sewage, and they were forced to head to the sewage at midnight, only to find a badly mutilated body.

She said that her brother had exited himself from the group before the arrest and later relocated to Kisii to avoid being the target of the group.
“Every time he visits Nakuru, they don’t fail to attack him, and there was a time about 15 members of the group confronted him,” she said.
The incident forced the police to launch a manhunt for the suspects, who are suspected to be operating from the informal settlements.
Nakuru County police commander Emmanuel Opuru has said that the suspects are still at large, but police are on their radar.
“We are pursuing the suspects seriously to ensure that they are apprehended and face the law accordingly,” Opuru said.
This comes at a time when the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, said that some of these gangs are sustained by politicians and vowed to crack down on them.
“What we are planning to do is identification and recognition of the challenges we have with gangs. We intend to do an intelligence-led operation, and this will target the gang leaders, “he said
