Kenya Navy intercepts a boat with drugs worth Ksh8.2B
Kenya Navy and the Kenya Coast Guard have intercepted a vessel ferrying a massive methamphetamine drug haul worth Ksh8.2 billion.
The Navy intercepted the consignment in a suspicious vessel some 630 kilometres off the coast of Mombasa in the Indian Ocean and escorted it safely to port under armed guard on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

“Kenya Navy was able to intercept this suspicious vessel about 630 kilometres east of Mombasa, and we have been able to conduct this operation successfully. We were able to arrest it and escort it here to the Port of Mombasa,” Deputy Navy Commander Sankale Kiswaa confirmed the operation.

Sankale and other security officers hailed the record interception of more than a ton (1,024 kilograms) of methamphetamine as a breakthrough in Kenya’s ongoing fight against narcotics trafficking and addiction.
What was discovered
Addressing the media after the operation, the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Amin Mohammed Ibrahim, corroborated that the officers discovered 769 packages containing methamphetamine.
“We were able to discover 769 packages containing a crystalline substance that weighed approximately 1,024 kilograms of which came out to be methamphetamine,” Amin stated.

Six foreign nationals were arrested and are in custody, pending arraignment in court, while the consignment was seized and secured as evidence.

Investigations launched
Following the operation, DCI released another statement announcing an investigation to unravel the destination and the origin of the consignment.
“Authorities Investigating Origin and Destination of Ksh 8.2 Billion Methamphetamine Shipment,” DCI’s statement read in part.
“Investigations are underway to determine the source and intended destination of 769 packages containing a crystalline substance, identified as methamphetamine. The seized narcotics have an estimated street value of Ksh8.2 billion,” it added.
