KDF imposter Maingi asks for favourable bond terms, claims prison condition worsening his health
Joshua Muthwii Maingi, a man charged with pretending to be a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) brigadier, taking money from unsuspecting citizens, promising them KDF positions, has filed an application seeking bond reviews.
Maingi was arraigned and charged on Monday, November 24, 2025, for receiving Ksh1.2 million from two people promising them KDF letters for their children to join the Recruit Training School (RTS) at Moi Barracks in Eldoret.
He was also charged with being in possession of public stores, namely, one pair of Kenya Air Force combat dress, two slip-ons of rank (Brigadier), two gorget patches of ranking officer (Brigadier) and one Kenya Air Force badge of rank of brigadier of the KDF.
Maingi denied all the charges, and a plea of not guilty was entered by Milimani Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego, who released him on a bond of Ksh1 million with an alternative of Ksh500,000 cash bail and ordered him to deposit his passport in court.
“The accused is granted a bond of Ksh1 million with one surety of a similar amount with an alternative of Ksh500,000 cash bail with two contact persons, and he should deposit his passport in court,” Magistrate Alego ruled.
Review of bond terms
Maingi, who is currently remanded at the Industrial Area Remand Prison, has now filed a certificate of urgency at the Chief Magistrate’s Court seeking to have the court review bond terms and grant him more favourable and lenient ones.
In his application, he avers that the bond terms as stipulated by the court are quite high, noting that he is not able to meet the said terms since he is financially crippled, as he has been drained while footing his medication.
“I pray that the honourable court reviews the bond terms and grants more favourable and lenient terms,” the accused states in his application.
The court papers state that the accused person is a diabetic and hypertensive patient, and since he is in remand, his health has significantly deteriorated. He is unable to access specialised medication.
“The prison facilities have further significantly contributed to the deterioration of his health, and efforts by his immediate family to ensure that he accesses the medication have been significantly hampered by prison protocols,” part of the application read.
Further, he states that his family has immensely suffered as a result of his continued detention on November 16, 2025, adding that he is the sole breadwinner.
The application also reveals that his wife is willing to provide her details as the contact person as security for availing him in court for his trial.
