DCI nabs 6 over fatal shooting of officer in Thika

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested six persons of interest believed to be behind the fatal shooting of Police Constable Benard Koome Ithai, who was gunned down on June 18, 2025, at the Thika–Garissa Road interchange in Kiambu County.

Speaking through its official X account on Monday, July 21, 2025, the DCI confirmed that a targeted operation led officers to a hideout in Kahawa West and Kiamumbi, where the six were apprehended. The arrests followed weeks of investigations and analysis of crucial forensic leads.

“Thanks to crucial forensic leads, detectives launched an operation that led them to a hideout in Kahawa West,” the DCI posted.

During the arrest, detectives also seized a vehicle, which is said to have been used in the commission of the crime.

The fatal shooting

The arrests follow the fatal shooting of Constable Koome, 32, who was on patrol duty when he confronted a motorcycle rider suspected of criminal activity in the Cravers area of Thika Town.

A brief confrontation ensued, during which the assailant allegedly drew a firearm and shot the officer in the neck. He was rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the incident, a manhunt was immediately launched with support from members of the public. Authorities have credited citizen cooperation and forensic evidence as key components in identifying the persons of interest.

“We are pursuing every lead to ensure those behind this heinous act face justice,” said Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga. “The death of Constable Koome was a stark reminder of the sacrifices our officers make daily.”

The DCI continues to urge the public to report any information that may assist in ongoing investigations, reaffirming its commitment to protecting law enforcement officers and maintaining public safety.
