4 persons of interest nabbed in Mtwapa drug bust

Police in Mtwapa Town in Kilifi County have arrested four persons of interest following a targeted drug trafficking operation and street crime operation.

The move comes amid concerted efforts from the Ministry of Interior in collaboration with other relevant agencies, such as the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), to tame drug abuse in the country, especially among the youth.

 “On 9th September 2025, National Police Service officers from Mtwapa Police Station conducted an intelligence-led crackdown on drug traffickers and muggers in the Kipapuro and Mzambarauni areas on the outskirts of Mtwapa town,” the police statement posted on X on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, read in part.

According to police reports, the persons of interest were apprehended without incident and taken into custody at Mtwapa Police Station. The confiscated narcotics were also secured as evidence.

“They arrested four suspects and seized 55 rolls of cannabis,” police said.

 The four are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue to arrest more persons of interest.

“The suspects were escorted to the station and placed in custody, pending arraignment in court, while the evidence was secured at the same facility,” the statement read.

Elsewhere, police in Awendo intercepted a person of interest transporting a sack of bhang along the Migori–Kisii Road on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

In a statement on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, through their X page, the NPS said the operation followed timely intelligence about suspicious activity along the route.

“Police officers in Awendo, Migori County, yesterday intercepted and arrested a suspect who was transporting a sack of cannabis sativa along the Migori–Kisii road on a motorcycle.”

The person of interest, who is being held in custody pending legal proceedings, was transporting the bhang on a motorcycle.

Elsewhere, in a sting operation in Ahero, Kisumu County, NACADA officers working with police recovered sacks of bhang worth Ksh12 million hidden in a house and arrested four persons of interest.

“The suspect is being held in custody pending processing and court arraignment,” the police statement added.

Community engagement remains a key part of the strategy. The police urged residents to report any suspicious activity, saying,

“We urge members of the public to report any suspicious activity, especially related to drug trafficking. You can contact your nearest police station,” the police said.
