CEOs and MDs who left their jobs in 2024

In 2024, several Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Managing Directors (MDs) left their roles through resignation, retirement or end of tenure.

While some left for new appointments, others left without announcing their next moves while others took a sabbatical from the corporate world.

Here is a list of some CEOs and MDs who left their roles in 2024;

Akshay Grover

Akshay Grover left his role as the CEO of Cellulant in January 2024.

Grover, according to the firm, has left to focus on personal matters.

Grover was appointed as the CEO in an acting in 2021 three months after joining Cellulant as the chief financial officer, before being confirmed months later.

He had replaced the firm’s co-founder Ken Njoroge who resigned after 18 years at the helm.

Chike Isiuwe

Until the end of January 2024, Chike Isiuwe was the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of UBA Kenya Bank Limited.

He was appointed to the role in August 2021, and when he left, Mary Mulili was appointed to fill in his shoes.

The company said Isiuwe left the role to take up another role within the UBA Group.

Geoffrey Odundo

Geoffrey Odundo left as the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) CEO on March 1, 2024, after completing his tenure having served for nine years at the helm.

Following the completion of Odundo’s tenure, the board announced the appointment of Frank Mwiti as the new Chief Executive of the NSE effective May 2, 2024.

Later,  Odundo was appointed executive advisor of the CPF Group.

Joe Munene

In June 2024, Standard Group CEO Joe Munene, who had held the position on interim since July 6, 2023, left the role after serving for one year.

In his place, Marion Gathoga-Mwangi was appointed as the new CEO, an appointment that took effect on July 15, 2024.

Stephen Gitagama

Within the year, former Nation Media Group (NMG) CEO Stephen Gitagama announced his resignation at the end of July 2024. 

Gitagama exited NMG alongside 80 per cent of the board of directors.

Gitagama, who has held the seat for seven years announced his departure on Friday, July 19, 2024.

He succeeded Joe Muganda in January 2018. Before ascending to the top seat, Gitagama held the position of the Group Finance Director.

Andrew Mulwa

Still, in July 2024, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) acting CEO Dr Andrew Mulwa left his role. Mulwa had been serving in an acting capacity since March 2023.

Albert Wesonga

In October, AFC Leopards announced they had parted ways with acting CEO Albert Wesonga after one year at the helm of the club.

In a statement on October 26, 2024, Ingwe stated that Wesonga’s term had expired and that he was no longer allowed to transact any business on behalf of the club.

Wesonga rose to the helm of the club in October 2023, after Ingwe failed to win a single match in their six opening matches of the 2023/2024 season.

At the time, the 12-time champions Ingwe resolved to relieve its former CEO Victor Bwibo of his duties to chart a new path.

Barry Otieno

Barry Otieno resigned from his position as the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO on October 8, 2024.

In his place, FKF appointed Patrick Korir as interim CEO pending the appointment of a substantive CEO.
