Kenyan rapper Stevo Simple Boy has finally admitted that his much-publicized purchase of a Mazda Demio earlier this year was not real.

Speaking during an interview on YouTube show on Monday, May 20, 2025, Stevo confessed that the whole story was staged for publicity.

Hio gari yenye nilikuwa nimesema nimenunua, ilikuwa ni papara tu,” he said, referring to a popular sheng phrase meaning it was all for clout.

In February, the musician had shared photos of himself beside a sleek, maroon Mazda Demio. One photo showed him hugging the car, while another captured him leaning on the bonnet with a wide smile.

The post quickly went viral, with fans and fellow artistes congratulating him for the apparent milestone.

At the time, Stevo claimed the vehicle was worth over Ksh2.1 million, and hinted that he had bought it with the help of a car dealership.

He even thanked the alleged dealer and prayed for blessings upon them.

Fallout with Machabe

Stevo also spoke on why he parted ways with his former manager, Machabe, stating that the separation was due to a lack of accountability.

The rapper alleged that funds were often mismanaged and there was little transparency in how decisions were made.

“There was no accountability. I couldn’t keep working with someone who didn’t value transparency,” he said.

He further revealed that the reports suggesting he had signed Machabe under his wing were also part of a clout strategy aimed at boosting their visibility in the entertainment scene.

Fans react

Following his confession, fans expressed mixed feelings online. Some sympathized with Stevo, saying the pressure of staying relevant in the limelight can drive artists to such tactics. Others, however, criticized the misleading move, urging him to be more authentic with his journey.

Despite the backlash, Stevo remains optimistic about his future in music and content creation.

“I believe God will open new doors,” he said, noting that lessons from his past will shape how he handles fame moving forward.
