Pritty Vishy has opened up about her experiences growing up with an abusive stepfather and how her mother stayed despite the abuse.

Posting on Instagram on Monday, November 17, 2025, she said the situation made her reflect on how victims often enable abuse even when leaving would be the best choice.

Pritty said, “It’s just hurts how these victims enable abuse as much is hard to leave an abusive relationship, trust me, I know how hard it is. I have seen my mum stay even when my stepdad abused me in different ways, just hold yourself accountable for staying even if you know that the best thing to do for yourself is to leave.”

She spoke about the pain of watching her mother endure abuse while trying to care for the family. Pritty explained that seeing her mother stay despite the harm made her understand the difficult choices victims face.

Vishy encouraged people to recognise their own responsibility for staying in harmful situations, even while acknowledging that leaving is not easy.

Victims’ choices too hard to understand

Pritty also shared her thoughts on supporting other victims of gender-based violence. She said, “Imagine trying to help someone who is going through Gender Based Violence, GBV, then you hear her saying ‘hamtanipigia bwana’ like girllll.”

She highlighted that sometimes, even with support, victims can make choices that are hard for outsiders to understand. Her comments show the complexity of abuse and the challenges of helping those affected.

Her story shows that abuse affects both children and adults in a family and that witnessing abuse can leave lasting emotional impacts. Pritty’s reflections also show the courage it takes for victims to acknowledge their situation and the strength required to eventually leave abusive relationships.

Through sharing her personal experiences, Pritty is bringing attention to the difficult realities faced by many families dealing with abuse. She encourages accountability while recognising the emotional and psychological difficulties involved.

Her openness about her childhood and her mother’s experience adds a personal perspective to the many discussions that we currently have about gender-based violence and family dynamics.
