Oga Obinna reflects on early inspiration from P-Square that fuelled his music journey

Media personality and fast-rising singer Steve Maghana, alias Oga Obinna, has shared an intimate glimpse into the moment that sparked his musical ambition, tracing it back to a high school obsession with the hit song Temptations by Nigerian music duo P-Square.

Speaking in a video shared on his Instagram page on Saturday, August 16, 2025, Obinna recalled attending school near Maseno, where he would frequently visit friends who had rented a house close by, simply to watch the music video on repeat.

At a time when CDs were the primary way to access music videos, Oga Obinna remembered one of the artistes, Rude Boy, whose matching hat, t-shirt, and rubber shoes left an indelible impression on him.

“So this song, Temptations by P-Square, I just heard it in a TikTok challenge, and it has taken me way back. Let me tell you something interesting. That song is part of an album by P-Square. When it came out, I was in high school near Maseno. I used to go to my friends’ house nearby because they had the CD, and I would watch it on repeat, again and again,” he said.

Another striking moment for him was seeing Mr P dressed entirely in a white vest, white trousers, white shoes, and a white durag, which he described as awe-inspiring and aspirational.

“One of the artistes in the album, I think Rude Boy, used to wear a certain hat that matched his T-shirt and rubber shoes. I used to say to myself. One day I want to dress like this. There’s also another part in the song where Mr P is dressed entirely in white—a white vest, white trousers, white shoes, and a white durag. I used to admire that so much and tell myself. This is what I want. I want to be a superstar,” he added.

Obinna revealed that he had begun as a rapper during his high school years, but watching Temptations reinforced his determination and gave him a tangible sense of the possibilities in music.

He said he envisioned producing his own songs, albums, and EPs that could resonate with audiences the same way, and that he was determined to keep trying despite challenges.

“That admiration is what pushed me to keep doing music. Back then, I was a rapper in high school. I told myself that one day I would release a song, an album, or an EP, and it would become a hit. I kept trying over time, but I was sure that this was what I wanted,” he added.

He added that the video instilled in him a mindset of perseverance and focus, saying he would not allow anything to derail him from his dream of becoming a superstar.

He said this early experience shaped his commitment to music and strengthened his belief that hard work and consistency pay off.

Obinna, on that note, also revealed that everything he has achieved so far is a result of knowing what he wanted and pursuing it relentlessly.

“Anything that could derail me from this, I didn’t want it, and that’s why I have always been determined not to give up,” he said.

The media personality then advised young people to remain focused on their goals and to avoid distractions that could derail their dreams.

He said ambition, patience, and consistent effort are key, and that early inspiration, when nurtured, can lead to lasting success in any field.

“What I am saying is, the things you want are very possible. Everything I have in my life right now, I really wanted it so much.”
