Netflix to discontinue free plan in Kenya
By K24 Editorial, October 3, 2023It is the end of an era for Kenya as Netflix announces the discontinuation of its free plan.
In an email seen by this writer, the streaming service notified members that their free memberships would be automatically cancelled when the plan ends on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
“Hi Netflix member, we’re writing to let you know about an upcoming change to your membership. On November 1st, 2023, the Free plan will no longer be available and your membership will end,” part of the email read.
Members have been advised that no action is required to cancel their memberships. However, those who wish to continue watching should upgrade to their various paid plans.
“With the paid monthly plans, members will unlock all shows and movies, and more features, and enjoy the option to watch on a phone, TV or laptop.”
Netflix launched a free plan in September 2021 that allowed Kenyans to enjoy Netflix ad-free on Android mobile phones.
At the time, members were only required to sign up by entering their email, confirming they were 18 years or over and creating a password.
The streaming service said the move aimed at marketing the product noting; “…many people in Kenya had never watched Netflix before.”
