In a poignant reflection on grief and supernatural connections, veteran musician Nazizi Hirji recently opened up about a unique experience following the tragic death of her son Jazeel Adam in December 2023.
The rapper, known for her powerful voice and impactful lyrics, described how she has been visited by a particular butterfly during her moments of deepest sorrow.
In her emotional narrative, Nazizi revealed that the butterfly appears consistently at around 2 am, the time when her son would typically wake up.
“Guess who came last night… its always this particular butterfly, every time the pain is unbearable I’m visited by this exact color and size of butterfly and always around 2 am when my baby would wake up,” Nazizi wrote in a post on InstaStories on Friday September 27, 2024.
Cultural significance of butterflies
This personal account touches on the profound ways in which individuals cope with loss. For Nazizi, the butterfly serves as a symbol of comfort and connection to her son, offering solace in her darkest hours.
Such experiences are not uncommon; many people report signs or symbols that remind them of lost loved ones, often interpreting them as messages from the beyond.
In various cultures, butterflies are often seen as symbols of transformation, hope, and the spirit world. They are frequently associated with the idea of souls transitioning into the afterlife.
Nazizi’s connection to the butterfly thus aligns with broader cultural interpretations, making her story particularly relatable and poignant.
Tragic loss
Nazizi lost her son Jazeel in a tragic accident on Christmas Day while on vacation in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 2023.
Following the incident, the family issued a statement expressing profound sorrow, confirming that Jazeel’s body was later transferred to Nairobi, where he was buried on December 27 in accordance with Muslim burial rites.
“It is with profound sorrow and deepest heartache that we confirm the tragic passing of Jazeel, the beloved son of Nazizi Hirji,” the statement said.
“We lost this young soul in an unfortunate accident at a hotel where the family was staying. He was buried earlier today in Nairobi, in accordance with his religion.”
In light of the heartbreaking loss, Nazizi and her family requested privacy as they navigated their grief. They emphasized the need for compassion and understanding during this difficult time, asking the public to allow them space to mourn.
“We appeal for your compassion and understanding out of respect for their need for peace in this time of mourning. We kindly request everyone to allow Nazizi and her family the space they need to begin the healing process,” the statement added.
The family also noted that a more detailed statement would be shared once they have had time to process their loss.
“Until then, we deeply appreciate your prayers and thoughts for Nazizi and her family during this incredibly difficult time. We kindly remind all entities to refrain from reaching out to the family directly to respect their privacy.”

She reminisced about the good times she shared with her son when he was still alive in several posts she shared on social media.
