Maureen Waititu exposes new trick used by scammers using no caller ID

Content creator Maureen Waititu has raised an alarm over a new phone scam targeting mobile users through calls that appear as “No Caller ID.”
In a post shared on her Instagram on Sunday, August 17, 2025, Waititu showed her phone flooded with hundreds of missed calls, highlighting how scammers exploit this tactic to confuse and frustrate users.
“Yesterday I got bombarded with hundreds of No Caller ID calls,” she wrote. “It turns out scammers use this trick to frustrate you into switching off your phone. That’s when they strike by swapping your SIM and it can be game over.”
The scam involves illegally transferring a victim’s phone number to a new SIM card without their consent, giving criminals access to personal information, banking details, and other sensitive data.
Waititu emphasised the seriousness of the threat, urging followers to remain vigilant.
“Please share this with your people, it could save someone from a serious scam,” she added, highlighting the need for wider public awareness.

Waititu also offered practical tips to safeguard mobile accounts. “Whitelist your phone number, block ‘Unknown’ or ‘No Caller ID’ calls, and upgrade your Truecaller to Premium. Spam calls get blocked automatically,” she advised.
How the Scam Works
According to Waititu, scammers deliberately overwhelm users with anonymous calls to create frustration and distraction, increasing the chances that victims fall prey to SIM swapping.

She stressed that users should avoid answering unknown calls and ensure their mobile accounts are secured with strong passwords or two-factor authentication.
“This is a warning to everyone, be careful with calls you don’t recognise,” Waititu said. “Stay safe out there and make sure your mobile accounts are secure.”
The warning comes amid a wider context of rising cybercrime in Kenya, where mobile users are increasingly targeted through digital scams
