Former BBC journalist Makena Njeri has blasted the Kenya Films and Classification Board for banning a gay film titled “I am Samuel” by terming it as blasphemous. The film sought to showcase a gay Kenyan man’s struggle to be accepted by his family and country.

Makena, who is a self-confessed member of the LGBTQ, took to her Instagram to slam the Christopher Wambua led organization for suppressing the rights of the gay community members.

“Oh the Christianity agenda is being used once again to stop progress and inclusivity. KFCB do better,” she posted.

KFCB announced on Thursday September 23, 2021 that it prohibits the exhibition, distribution, possession or broadcast of “I am Samuel”.

In its statement, the board stated that the documentary was blasphemous and an affront to the constitution. The decision has however been met with opposition from members of the LGBTQ community both locally and internationally.

The Kenyan gay community has always decried discrimination and suppression of gay rights.

Makena recently resigned from BBC, to focus on her new organization, Bold Network Africa, that seeks to educate the society in Africa about LGBTQ community through films, documentaries and training in a bid to end constant discrimination of the gay community.
