Lindah Muthoni highlights safety concerns as CBD theft incidents trend online
By Paulette Mboga, September 3, 2025Reports of rising insecurity in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) have once again caught public attention, with social media users sharing alarming accounts of theft and harassment.
Digital creator Lindah Muthoni recently shared her concern on social media on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, noting that stories about the CBD being unsafe were “all over my FYP today”, reflecting a growing anxiety among residents and commuters.

The post comes amid a surge in online reports highlighting incidents of robbery and unsafe conditions in the heart of the city. Citizens and influencers alike are using platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter to warn the public and draw attention to the increasing threats faced in the CBD, especially during the evening hours.
Theft and harassment
Digital creator Mjaka Mfine also sounded the alarm, warning city-goers about the return of thieves and the risks they pose.
“The thieves are back. Be careful when you are in town. They will hurt you, and they will steal from you. Wezi wamerudi; wanakuibia kwa matatu, especially CBD after 6:00 pm. Cases are rising every day. I think I have come across 10 videos today. Kaa rada,” she wrote.
Such posts indicate a troubling trend, with many residents sharing videos and testimonials of thefts taking place in public transport, streets, and other areas of the CBD. Analysts note that the rising insecurity is linked to several factors, including insufficient policing in key hotspots, increasing unemployment, and the concentration of economic activity in the CBD, which makes it a target for criminal activity.
Social media reports suggest that enforcement is inconsistent, leading to a heightened perception of danger among the public.
As the conversation around CBD safety continues online, residents and influencers alike are emphasising the need for proactive measures. Social media has become a tool for advocacy, alerting the public while pressuring authorities to increase surveillance and improve safety measures.
The trend of reporting unsafe incidents online reflects both the severity of the situation and the urgency for intervention. For now, citizens are being advised to exercise caution, especially in the evening, while authorities work to address the growing security challenges in Nairobi’s bustling CBD.
