Comedian Eric Omondi has told President William Ruto to cut down on the number of governors.
Speaking on Friday, July 12, 2024 during an interview with one of the local TV stations, the comedian-cum activist said the number of counties should be reduced to 24.
Eric Omondi on Ruto’s legacy
Eric Omondi argues that President Ruto has a chance of making history and leaving a lasting legacy.
“We need a lean government. Mr President take your time, when you are ready, sijui kama tutaenda referendum. We need to cut down on the number of counties and governors from 47 to 24,” Eric Omondi stated.
The comedian gave an example of Texas state in the United States of America, which he says is twice the size of Kenya but is led by one governor.
Omondi on Woman Representatives
He went ahead to call on President Ruto to do away with the position of Woman Representative.
According to Omondi, the County Members of Parliament have failed on their mandate, and the position should therefore be scrapped.
He says there was a clause in the unpopular Finance Bill 2024, that had proposed taxes on women sanitary towels, which the Woman MPs had failed to notice until Kenyans raised concerns.
“The President needs to leave a Legacy. Am very disappointed in the work of the Woman Representatives. How can we have a clause in the Finance Bill 2024, that proposes taxes on sanitary pads, yet we have 47 Woman Representatives. They could not hold a forum and protest as 47 Woman Reps. What are they representing? Do we even need Women Reps? ” Eric Omondi stated.
Ruto Cabinet dissolution
The comedian’s remarks come a day after President Ruto sacked his entire Cabinet, with only Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi surviving the axe.
Omondi had earlier on urged President Ruto to fire all his Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries before Thursday, July 11, 2024.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, by virtue of the law, will remain part of the cabinet since he can only leave the office through impeachment, resignation, being incapacitated or death.
Ruto while making the announcement on dissolving his cabinet on Thursday, July 11, 2024, said he was forced to fire the Cabinet Secretaries after a reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of the cabinet and its achievements and challenges.
After his announcement, Ruto said he will now engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, to set up a broad-based government.
