Comedian Eric Omondi has appealed to Kenyans to offer financial support to renowned singer Mary Maina, alias Marya, who recently suffered a stroke that has left her unable to walk or perform any physical duties.

In a touching post on Instagram on Monday, June 9, 2025, Eric described Marya as a beautiful sister who has entertained the nation for decades, emphasising the urgent need for assistance as she battles through this challenging time.

“Hey guys, this is Marya, our beautiful sister who has entertained us for decades. She has suffered a stroke and is unable to walk or perform any physical duties,” Eric posted.

Eric went on to reveal that the stroke has forced Marya to cancel all her scheduled shows.

He added that this has only escalated the matter, as she cannot offset the mounting medical bills on herself while at the same time fending for her two children.

“All her shows have been cancelled. She is the mother of two beautiful children, and she needs us now. Her bills have piled up,” Eric added.

Eric then called upon the public to rally behind Marya, urging everyone to contribute whatever they can to ease her burden and help her through this difficult period.

He revealed that all donations can be sent directly to Marya’s contact number and emphasised that there is an even greater need for Kenyans to support her, as she was once their beloved singer.

“Her bills have piled up. Please send whatever you can to her number 0719210779 (Name: Mary Maina). God bless you. 🙏🙏🙏🙏#SisiKwaSisi,” he added.

In the post, Eric also included a video of himself visiting Marya at her home, where she appeared frail as relatives assisted her to move from one place to another.

Sudden illness

During Eric’s visit, Marya spoke at length about how the ailment struck her, revealing that she had not anticipated the sudden onset and was engaged in her routine tasks when her hand unexpectedly became unsteady.

She revealed that she was holding her baby at the time, and out of nowhere, her hand lost its grip, causing the baby to fall.

“I just woke up one morning; I was fine. I was holding my baby and tried to hold the baby tightly close to me, but my hand just gave up—you can see it is not moving. The baby fell, and when I tried to stand up to pick up the baby and comfort them, my left leg also gave way,” she said.

She went on to say that the left side of her body is now numb and that her situation has worsened because she has to rely on a caregiver twenty-four hours a day.

Marya, who is well known for hits like ‘Chokoza,’ then asked Kenyans with kind hearts to help her, saying she feels like her life has changed completely.

“Just like that, my left side is now completely numb. They told me I have had an ischaemic stroke, so I need care all day and night, and I have to do physiotherapy every day. I also need a caregiver. My shows have been cancelled since people saw my condition, so I cannot perform, and I must attend physiotherapy. It is not easy; it feels like my life has done a complete turn,” she concluded.
