Chebet Ronoh says her family took her to rehab

Former radio presenter and digital content creator Deborah Chebet Ronoh has opened up about her past struggles with alcoholism and how she ended up at a rehabilitation centre.

Speaking during a candid conversation on the That’s What She Said podcast, Ronoh revealed that her alcoholism became so severe that her family intervened and took her to a rehabilitation centre.

Additionally, Ronoh revealed that although her family intervened by sending her to rehab, she felt emotionally isolated.

She said she felt her family did not truly understand her internal struggles, and she struggled to communicate her emotions or reach out for support effectively.

“My family took me to rehab, although they did not understand it, they were not people whom I could reach out to or communicate my emotions to,” she shared.

Ronoh on identity crisis

During the conversation, Ronoh also reflected that when they were growing up, there was a lot of identity confusion because no one talked about how parents essentially let you go at the age of 18.

She said that for her, there was no emotional foundation, no guidance, and she felt she could not express or share her feelings with them.

“When we were growing up there was a lot of identity crisis no one talks about how parents let you go at the age of 18, for me, there was no emotional building, guidance it is really,” she added.

Alcohol addiction

In 2023, during an interview with Lynn Ngugi, Ronoh disclosed that she feared success so much that it led her to sabotage opportunities and indulge in alcohol as a coping mechanism. People around her believed in her greatness but she did not.

I was so scared of success, I would get opportunities and I would postpone them.I genuinely believed I didn’t think I deserved them till now. I would ignore emails, I would not show up in the fear of I don’t know if I can handle it,” she explained

She explained that she had not been drinking for fun, it was a coping mechanism.

“I wasn’t drinking to have fun. I came to realise that a lot of the coping mechanisms we have. Alcohol was a creeping monster in my life. it started like a joke. I was young and trying to have fun and it became a coping mechanism. I would drink until I blackout, I wasn’t drinking to have fun”

She revealed that over eighteen months, she drank heavily, spending her earnings on alcohol, which ultimately impacted her health and relationships and resulted in two separate rehab stints.

“I have been to rehab twice. My first time was forceful,” she revealed.
