Chebet Ronoh opens up on battling mental health struggles

Former radio presenter and digital content creator Deborah Chebet Ronoh has courageously shared her deeply personal journey of mental health challenges, shedding light on the silence, shame, and resilience she’s experienced along the way.

Speaking during a candid conversation on the That’s What She Said podcast, Ronoh revealed that during her struggles, she often felt ashamed and wanted to hide and ignore her pain, believing it would simply go away, but it never did.

She explained how that emotional suppression made her feel powerless and disconnected from her authentic self.

“We normally ignore our mental health for so long, for me, when it is bad, I kind of feel shameful, like I want to hide and ignore it (ati itaisha tu), but it never really does and that shame keeps a lot of people silent and it does more damage and good when we are not speaking to people or we are not owning up to the reality that is going on,” she disclosed.

Healing journey

In addition, the content creator said that although she is doing better now, what continues to trouble her is the extent of what she tolerated in the past.

She admitted she is battling feelings of shame over decisions made for love and validation, ignoring her intuition and staying in situations too long.

Additionally, Ronoh explained that during her healing journey, she is focusing on learning to offer herself grace and compassion.

“I am actually doing better, but what is kicking me is the things I tolerated. What I’m battling with is that there’s so much I let it slide, and there is a version of me that am ashamed about of for things I did for love and validation,” Ronoh added.

“When I ignored my intuition when I stayed with people longer than I should, that is what I am battling with now in my healing, but I am learning to give myself grace and compassion.”

Sobriety

The content creator has struggled with alcoholism and was twice admitted to a rehabilitation facility before she ultimately got sober.

Ronoh opened up about her struggle with alcoholism in a video she posted on her Instagram account on July 25, 2023.

The content creator noted that alcohol had taken a toll on her physical and mental health.

“Alcohol has put me in rehab twice, it has put me in the hospital a couple of times so that I could literally function,” she shared.

Ronoh stated that her turning point came when doctors warned her that continued drinking of liquor would have a devastating effect on her liver which was already failing.

“I began experiencing downside effects of my health, from my eyes to my liver, my doctor looked at me and asked me ‘Is this something you really want to continue?” She said.

This wake-up call led her to embark on a journey to recovery from alcohol addiction.
