Alex Mwakideu mocks Tanzania in football banter
By Paulette Mboga, August 19, 2025Media personality Alex Mwakideu has sparked online excitement after openly mocking Tanzania in a football banter session. His remarks came in the heat of discussions surrounding Kenya’s football performance, particularly following Kenya’s remarkable victory over Morocco.
Through an Instagram post on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Mwakideu did not hold back as he aimed at Tanzania, suggesting that their recent panic and chatter were unnecessary.
“Iwafikie Tanzania naona wameanza mdomo. Kitu inaitwa kupaniki. Wameanza kuongea sana. Tuko chini ya mwamba, na mwamba juu yetu,” he said, adding that Kenya had already proven its strength by beating Morocco.
According to him, if Kenya could conquer such strong opponents, then Tanzania posed no real threat.
He further emphasised Kenya’s resilience, pointing out that the Harambee Stars managed to defeat Morocco even while playing with ten men. “Sisi tushamalizana na Morocco, na tuliwapiga tukiwa na watu kumi uwanjani. Tunawasubiri kwa hamu na ghamu. Hamtuwezi leo, hamtuwezi kesho, hamtuwezi jana,” he declared boldly, sending football fans into a frenzy.
Tanzania’s performance in CHAN
The banter comes at a time when Tanzania has been competing in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).
In their group stage games, the Taifa Stars managed to show flashes of brilliance, but consistency proved to be their biggest challenge.
Despite their spirited efforts, Tanzania has struggled to make a strong impression on the continental stage, facing tough competition from established football powerhouses.

While Tanzanian fans remain optimistic about the future, critics argue that the team still has a long way to go before matching up to the level of North and West African giants.
Their next challenge will be against Morocco in the quarterfinals. The match is scheduled for August 22, 2025, at 8 pm at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, promising to be an electrifying night for Tanzanian football fans.
In their last five meetings, Tanzania has managed just a single victory, while Morocco has dominated with four wins.
The Harambee Stars beat Morocco to go top of what was described as the group of death.
The East African rivalry
Mwakideu’s comments add fuel to the long-standing football rivalry between Kenya and Tanzania, two neighbours whose sporting banter often spills beyond the pitch. Whether it is Harambee Stars against Taifa Stars or Gor Mahia against Simba SC, clashes between the two countries always generate heated discussions among fans.
Tanzanian supporters may view Mwakideu’s remarks as unnecessary, but his comments have undeniably reignited the fierce football rivalry between the two countries. With both sides passionate about their teams, the banter shows just how deep the love for the game runs in East Africa.
