Lawyer and politician Willis Otieno has slammed a section of leaders claiming to have spoken to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga before his death.

In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Otieno said that some politicians were pretending to have had last conversations with Raila even though the ODM leader was already in India at the time and had passed away.

He criticised those trying to use Raila’s name for political mileage, saying pretenders always rush to borrow the voice of great men when they die.

“Now suddenly, everyone claims to have spoken to Baba “just before he died.” Even those saying he told them to stay in government, when by that time, he was already in India, a place one only reached after he had passed on. The truth is, when a great man falls, pretenders rush to borrow his voice,” Otieno stated.

Otieno’s remarks come as several politicians continue to make public claims about Raila’s final moments and his supposed wishes before he died.

His remarks follow comments by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, who also called out what he termed as hypocrisy among some leaders who spoke during Raila’s burial ceremonies in Bondo.

Amisi said those who loudly praised the ODM leader at his funeral were the same ones who had tormented him while he was alive. He vowed to continue defending Raila’s legacy and pushing for the ideals he stood for, saying the struggle for a better Kenya would go on.

“Those who were speaking and shouting at his funeral in Bondo were his tormentors,” Amisi said.

“Hypocrites have successfully buried you, Jakom! Baba, while alive, we never let you walk alone in the corridors of justice; we shall not let you down even in death. The struggle for a better Kenya continues! Aluta continua. Viva! Kenya needs a renaissance!” Amisi added,

Raila Odinga died in India, where he was undergoing treatment. His body was flown back to Kenya for public viewing and a state funeral attended by thousands of mourners, including President William Ruto and opposition leaders.
