Wetang’ula urges Luhya community to rally behind Ruto’s re-election bid

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged the Luhya community to rally behind President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.

While addressing the second anniversary celebrations of the Western Women Congress at Busibwabo Secondary School in Busia County on Friday, August 1, 2025, Wetang’ula emphasised that the Mulembe community should rally behind Ruto’s second-term bid so that they could secure goodwill and political capital for the next transition.

“I have therefore urged our community to rally behind Dr Ruto’s second-term bid in 2027 so that we can make this vision a reality. Our numerical strength as a people places us in a strong position in the race to succeed President Ruto,” Wetang’ula said.

Wetang’ula on Ruto’s promise

Additionally, the speaker noted that Ruto had honoured his promise to their community by appointing Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, alongside other leaders from their region, to key positions in government.

“I noted with appreciation that the Head of State has honoured his promise to our community by appointing Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, alongside other leaders from our region, into key positions in government,” he added.

The speaker further said the Luhya community is likely to succeed Ruto in 2032, noting that the region holds the numbers and political influence needed to mount a successful bid for the presidency.

Citing the 2019 census, which places the Luhya population at over 14 per cent of the national total, Wetang’ula emphasised the bloc’s potential to influence national outcomes.

“Today, while presiding over the second anniversary celebrations of the Western Women Congress at Busibwabo Secondary School in Busia County, I reminded the Mulembe nation that the Luhya community stands a better chance of succeeding President Dr William Ruto in 2032,” he said.

“I observed that if we remain united and stand firmly behind the President to secure a second term, it would motivate him to consider handing over the mantle of running the nation to one of our own when the time comes.”
