National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Kenyans to accord the country’s independent institutions the needed support for them to effectively undertake their mandates.

Speaking during a meeting with the National Integration and Cohesion Commission (NCIC) at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Wetang’ula assured the commission of support from the parliament.

“Today, I held a constructive engagement with the chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), Dr. Samuel Kobia, and members of the commission, who paid me a courtesy call at Parliament Buildings,” Wetang’ula said.

“As Parliament, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting independent institutions and constitutional commissions such as the IEBC, to ensure they are empowered to effectively execute their mandates.

Wetang’ula further pledged to ensure the commission is empowered to enhance its capacity to foster national unity, cohesion, and peaceful co-existence among Kenyans.

The meeting comes amid a heightened scrutiny of the workings of the independent bodies in the country. Among the institutions that came under the spotlight are the newly reconstituted IEBC and National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

The latter, constitutionally mandated to promote national integration by outlawing discrimination on ethnic and political grounds, has recently had to fend off accusations of operating with bias and favouritism, particularly in how it handles political speech from opposing sides of the political divide.

While commenting on the IEBC, Wetang’ula asked Kenyans to support the newly constituted electoral body tasked with conducting and overseeing the next national polls in 2027.

“I urge all Kenyans of goodwill to support the newly inaugurated IEBC to discharge its constitutional obligations, especially in preparation for the 2027 General Election. The commission deserves our collective support, not premature scrutiny or suspicion as it embarks on its critical national duty,” he stated.

His comments come after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna recently launched a a scathing attack on the integration commission.

In a statement on his X account on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Sifuna claimed the commission has consistently failed to apply its mandate fairly, saying it turns a blind eye when leaders from the ruling coalition make inflammatory remarks.

“The way the NCIC works is simple. They will let politicians from the ruling side spew hate as they watch and wait until one person in the opposition says something similar, then pretend to call ‘both sides, he said.
