Kandara MP Alice Wahome has said that Mt Kenya region is keen on protecting President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2022 polls even as leaders from the region throw their weight behind Deputy President William Ruto.
“We are not joking. We have already begun the journey of forming the next government and we will take care of President Uhuru Kenyatta whom we voted for three times,” Wahome said on Thursday, July 22 at a meeting attended by DP Ruto and MP’s allied to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
In her speech, the Kandara legislator argued that the region must protect Uhuru who has pushed for development in the area adding that the President together with Ruto served the people of Mt Kenya well during their two terms in power.
“He is ours but we must plan for his retirement because the constitution bars him from vying for office once more,” Wahome said.
While reaffirming her support for Ruto, Wahome said that next year’s polls should not be postponed stating that the people of Mt Kenya are keen in voting in the DP as a block.
“When it gets to August 9, 2022 we will be in the polling centres to vote in Deputy President William Ruto as the next President of this republic,” Wahome said.
“Mt Kenya is one, if all of us face William Ruto’s side then the entire mountain will vote for the Deputy President because we are one and love him,” the legislator said.
Wahome was quick to add that the region of Mt Kenya shares the same love for President Uhuru as they do for his deputy.
“We love working with the Deputy President. He has done a lot of work for us. He has been a very good helper to our President,” Wahome said.
During the same meeting, Deputy President William Ruto hit out at Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru whom he accused of playing devisive politics.
According to Ruto, Waiguru’s sentiments that The Agikiyu vote can only be rented but not bought was an insult to Kenyans who know their needs and leaders who can deliver.
“Please stop insulting Kenyans, there is no community, or person who is bought, rented or paid,” Ruto said, accusing Waiguru of lacking ideas to popularise the agenda of her political leaning.
Ruto argued that Kenyans are intelligent enough to make decisions on who they want us leaders and that citizens cannot allow the politics of tokenism.
In February 2021, Waiguru hit out at the leadership of UDA which was opposed to BBI bill after legislators of the Kirinyaga County Assembly passed the bill endorsing the change of the constitution push.
“I said it once and I will say it again. You can only rent a Kikuyu, but you cannot buy them. They know what is good for the region and they will stand by the region,” Waiguru said.
