UDA Party goes after Kahiga’s neck over celebratory remarks on Raila’s death

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party has come out guns blazing to slam Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial and celebratory remarks following the death of the late Raila Odinga.

Through a statement released on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, and signed by UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, the party said it was “deeply disturbed” by the governor’s comments, terming them careless, disrespectful, and unrepresentative of the ruling party or the Mt Kenya region.

“I am deeply disturbed by the reckless and insensitive remarks made by my colleague, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” Mbarire stated.

“At a time when our nation is mourning, such statements are not only careless but profoundly disrespectful, both to the memory of a statesman and to millions of Kenyans who are grieving his loss.”

Mbarire emphasised that Kahiga’s comments did not reflect the values of the party or the people of Mt Kenya, adding that UDA recognised Raila’s legacy as a champion of democracy and devolution.

“Let it be clearly understood: Governor Kahiga’s remarks do not reflect the views of the Mount Kenya region.

“Baba was a true champion of devolution, a visionary who believed in empowering counties and strengthening governance. On this, we stand united,” she said.

The Embu Governor went further to demand that Kahiga issue an immediate public apology to Raila’s family and Kenyans at large.

“I therefore demand that Governor Kahiga issue a public apology immediately.

“As leaders, we must rise above petty divisions and lead with empathy, respect, and a spirit of unity, especially in times when our nation seeks healing,” Mbarire added.

Kahiga’s remarks spark outrage

Governor Kahiga had earlier drawn public fury after remarks in Nyeri that appeared to suggest the late Raila Odinga’s death was “God’s intervention.”

“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that. We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” Kahiga said.

He added, “Who is God? Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole?

“He came through in His own way. He saw up there that people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”

His statement has since sparked a storm across the political divide, with calls for his resignation from leaders within and outside UDA, who termed his words divisive and insensitive during a period of national mourning.
