A rogue cop escaped lynching from an angry mob in Thika after demanding a bribe from a liquor store owner.

In a statement by DCI, Inspector Davis Simiyu of Kikuyu Police Station reportedly walked in Heisenberg Wines and Spirits in Runda estate with two others and pretended to be officials from Kenya Revenue Authority(KRA).

The officer would then conduct an inspection in the store where they accused the owner David Mathenge of tax evasion and selling products with fake excise stamps.

They later demanded to be bribed but Mathenge remained adamant which prompted them to ‘arrest’ him.

“After conducting a thorough ‘inspection’ of the liquor store, they turned to the owner David Mathenge and accused him of failing to issue ETR Tax invoices to customers and selling products with fake excise stamps, after which they demanded a hefty bribe,” the post read in parts.

Doubting their intentions, Mathenge raised an alarm that attracted members of the public who came to his aid.

Upon seeing the mob, two of them managed to take off but Simiyu was cornered and later rescued by police who arrested him and discovered a fake KRA identification document.

The officers further established that Simiyu was a rogue cop on interdiction with similar court cases at the Nakuru and Milimani Law courts.
