Chaos erupted along Thika Road near Juja Town on Monday, September 1, 2025, after a SuperMetro matatu was set on fire, causing panic among motorists and residents in the area.

Flames and thick smoke quickly drew attention, bringing traffic to a standstill and forcing commuters to divert to alternative routes.

In a video shared on TikTok by user @realmaina, bystanders could be seen milling around the scene.

One of them claimed that the matatu had hit a motorcyclist, which sparked outrage among nearby riders and onlookers.

“They collided, and someone has even died down there. He is lying on the ground. This was just set on fire now,” a man who shared a video using the TikTok handle @itskamami said.

The video showed red flames engulfing the vehicle while commuters watched in shock.

Thick black smoke rose into the air, adding to the chaos as people shouted and tried to move to safety.

Amid the frenzy, some bystanders attempted to approach the burning matatu, while others recorded the incident on their phones.

The intensity of the fire and the commotion caused fear and confusion, with nearby vehicles forced to slow down or take alternative routes to avoid the scene.

Emergency services eventually arrived to contain the fire and manage traffic, but the matatu was completely destroyed. Authorities cordoned off the area as investigations into the incident were launched, examining how the situation escalated so quickly.

Juja accident

The incident comes just months after the public transport provider released a statement following a road accident involving one of its buses.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, along Juja Road in Juja, where the bus collided with a lorry.

The company expressed regret over the event but confirmed that no lives were lost, with only two individuals sustaining minor injuries.

“Super Metro Limited regrets to confirm that one of our buses was involved in a road incident this morning along Juja Road, involving a collision with a lorry,” the statement read.

The company reported the matter to Juja Police Station and noted that it was fully cooperating with authorities to investigate the cause and ensure proper action is taken.

Super Metro emphasised its commitment to passenger safety.

“Super Metro Limited remains steadfast in upholding the highest standards of transport responsibility, prioritizing the safety and well-being of our passengers and the public,” they stated.

They also assured customers that they were working closely with the relevant authorities to resolve the issue swiftly.

The incident occurred near Burudani Address.

Emergency teams and bystanders at the scene were observed assisting the injured and administering first aid while waiting for medical support.

The bus was travelling from Juja Town to Nairobi CBD, using the Thika Superhighway service lane, before it veered off the road and flipped onto its side.

The driver and passengers in the front were compelled to escape by crawling through the broken windscreen. Super Metro thanked their customers and stakeholders for their support.

“We thank our customers and stakeholders for their understanding and support as we address this incident,” they stated.
