Two people have been confirmed dead after being involved in a grisly accident along Homa Bay-Rodi Road.

The two, a motorcycle rider and his pillion passenger, died on the spot after being involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming trailer in the Kogwe area within Homa Bay Town Constituency.

The two men were riding towards Rongo town while the trailer which was ferrying cement was moving towards Homa Bay Town.

Confirming the incident, Kobuola Kogwang’s assistant chief Philemon Ongola stated that preliminary investigations established that the motorcycle had a tyre bust which he said caused the accident.

Ongola pointed out that the rider had difficulty controlling the motorcycle before hitting on an incoming trailer.

“The rider suddenly moved in the opposite lane that is meant for oncoming vehicles before the impact,” Ongola said.

“As soon as he moved to the right, the trailer hit the rider and his passenger.”

Ongola said residents from the area rushed to the scene in a bid to save the men but they both succumbed to the injuries.

Eyewitness account

Justo Oyugi, an eyewitness, said that the motorcycle rider lost control after one of their tyres burst before colliding with the trailer.

“The accident occurred when the motorcycle’s rare tyre busts leading to a head-on collision which resulted in the death of the two men,” he said.

Oyugi said the area lacks speed bumps on the road which has in the past led to a number of accidents.

“The impact left the rider and passenger dead on the spot. The place is becoming a black spot and hence requires a speed bump,” Oyugi said.

Homa Bay sub-County police commander Peter Maluki who responded to the incident stated that the rider broke his legs following the accident and also bled profusely.

“Officers arrived at the scene and collected bodies to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary. We are urging road users to observe traffic rules to avoid accidents,” Maluki added.

“If possible, ensure vehicles or motorcycles are well serviced to minimize accidents.”
