A sewer line belonging to London Distillers Ltd. was on Saturday morning disconnected by the Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company and Export Processing Zones Authority.
The two agencies say they have tested the firm’s effluent released into River Athi, and have ascertained that the waste contains harmful chemicals surpassing the allowed amount by the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA) of 2016.
Mavoko water company managing director, Michael Mang’eli, told K24 Digital that they had to crack the whip on London Distillers because the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) was on their case, accusing them [Mavoko water company] of being responsible for the pollution of River Athi.
Mang’eli, in a letter dated September 18, gave London Distillers Ltd two weeks to comply with EMCA regulations.
The Mavoko water boss said if London Distillers Ltd won’t have complied after the two weeks end, then the regulator will be forced to permanently bar the firm from discharging waste into the public sewer system.
Export processing zones boss, George Makateto, echoed Mang’eli’s sentiments, saying the agency has since suspended London Distillers Ltd.’s permit to discharge effluent into the public sewer line in Athi.
Makateto said the embattled firm can only resume discharging its waste into the public sewer system once it complies with the acceptable industrial international standards for effluent treatment.
“The application will have to be approved by the EPZA board of directors,” said Makateto.
