St. George’s Girls Secondary School in Nairobi has been ordered closed indefinitely after a dramatic night of unrest that spilled onto the streets and drew in security officers.

The disturbance unfolded late on Sunday, September 7, 2025, when hundreds of learners went on strike over rampant corporal punishment at the school.

Some students forced open the gate, while others marched in groups, singing and blocking motorists. Shocked residents watched as the demonstration extended past midnight.

Parents who arrived at the school early Monday morning found officers keeping guard at the entrance, with teachers and administrators holding tense discussions.

Several learners were seen carrying their belongings in anticipation of closure even before an official announcement was made.

“We were woken up by noise and confusion,” said one resident of Kilimani, adding that the situation turned chaotic quickly. “It looked like the children were determined not to go back inside.”

Dagoretti North Sub-County Commissioner Juma and Kilimani OCPD Patricia Yegon later confirmed that the government had resolved to send students home.

Speaking after meeting the board and staff, Juma declared, “The safety of the learners is paramount. The school will remain closed until further notice, and parents will be updated on the next steps.”

Parents welcomed the decision, with many expressing relief that no learner had been harmed during the night’s unrest.

By Monday afternoon, officials had yet to provide clarity on what sparked the turmoil. Conflicting versions from parents and learners point to grievances that had built up over time.

The shutdown adds to concerns over rising cases of school indiscipline and night protests. It also comes days after all boarding schools in Gatundu South were closed due to arson cases
