Kenya Railways has acquired premium coaches for Nairobi-Mombasa Standard-Gauge Railway (SGR) luxury travel.
Receiving the coaches at Mombasa Port Reitz freight station, Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar said the newly introduced premium coaches will be in service soon.
“Inspected the newly acquired Madaraka Express Passenger Service Coaches. The new coaches include four premium, three first-class, and eleven upgraded economy coaches, one dining car, and one power car. The coaches will be introduced to the service soon,” Daghar said, in a post on X on Monday, July 22, 2024.
During the flagging of the coaches, Daghar was accompanied by other officials in the transport industry, including Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto, Kenya Railways Chairman Abdi Duale, and Managing Director Philip Mainga.
SGR premium class
The premium coaches will offer premium travellers a luxury experience with world-class amenities, including ample space for relaxation, and extra storage for luggage and shoes.
Additionally, the coaches will come fully equipped with entertainment facilities customised for every premium passenger travelling to or from Nairobi to Mombasa.
“Kenya Railways Premium is set to redefine luxury travel with exclusive amenities and world-class comfort.
Also, the seats are able to rotate in all directions, giving group passengers the ability to gather or face the direction they wish during the course of their journey,” Kenya Railways said.
The coaches also feature automated window shutters and contain only 28 seats, giving premium travellers a touch of privacy and space.
In comparison, economy coaches carry 118 passengers when fully packed, while the first-class section carries 72 passengers.
The premium coaches will come with wireless charging systems installed for travellers willing to enjoy luxury travel.
