Sakaja unveils measures to tackle rising Nairobi insecurity
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has confirmed that investigations are underway into the rising wave of criminal gangs operating within the city’s Central Business District (CBD).
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, September 8, 2025, the governor assured residents that firm measures are being put in place to restore safety and order in the capital.
Sakaja acknowledged growing concerns from Nairobians over recent cases of insecurity, particularly muggings and attacks that have been reported in the city centre.
He emphasised that tackling insecurity is a top priority for his administration, working hand-in-hand with the National Police Service and other stakeholders.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris had earlier attributed the mugging to the lack of street lighting.
Governor appeals for public vigilance
In his address, Sakaja appealed directly to residents to play an active role in safeguarding the city.
“What I am appealing to you as the governor, is that the citizens of Nairobi….we should take charge. Because that is your taxpayers’ money, that is your contribution. And as your governor, the first work of any governor is to secure their people,” he said.

The governor revealed that a meeting will soon be convened, bringing together key security officials, including Officers Commanding Stations (OCSs) and county commissioners. The session will establish a coordinated plan to dismantle the criminal gangs that have infiltrated the CBD.
As part of the response, Sakaja said the county will roll out a campaign in partnership with the National Police Service. The plan includes deploying more police officers to areas hit hardest by crime and adding county askaris to reinforce security operations.
He assured city dwellers that the criminal networks responsible for disrupting peace in the CBD would be dealt with firmly and swiftly.
“We want to tell people who have been doing this, you will not do this for a long time,” Sakaja warned.
The governor’s remarks come at a time when public frustration over insecurity in Nairobi has reached new highs. With residents, traders, and visitors expressing fears of harassment and attacks, the governor’s assurance aims to restore confidence and demonstrate that concrete actions are being taken.
As investigations continue, Nairobians are hopeful that the combined efforts of the county and national security teams will bring back normalcy and ensure that the CBD remains safe for all.
