Ruto pens an emotional tribute after sudden death of Makueni CEC Sonia Nzilani
By Lutta Njomo, November 22, 2025President William Ruto has shared an emotional tribute following the untimely death of Dr Sonia Nzilani, the Makueni County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture and Tourism.
In a lengthy statement released on Saturday, November 22, 2025, the head of state described the deceased as a dedicated public officer who was fully committed to the development of Makueni County.
Ruto singled out Sonia Nzilani’s efforts in promoting sustainable development in the county among her standout values.
“Our sincere condolences to the family, friends and people of Makueni following the passing of Dr. Sonia Nzilani, who served as the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture and Tourism,” Ruto’s statement read in part.

“Her commitment to public service and her passion for environmental conservation touched countless lives. She inspired many through her dedication to the growth of the county and her efforts to promote sustainable development,” the president added.
While expressing deep sorrow over Nzilani’s sudden death, Ruto indicated that her legacy should encourage the country to work together towards attaining the greening agenda.
“May her legacy encourage us all to work together for a greener and more prosperous future for Makueni and the nation. Rest In Peace,” Ruto concluded.

Her death
According to Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior, Nzilani was found unresponsive in her home on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
Governor Mutua described Nzilani’s passing as a profound loss to the county and to the communities she served with dedication.

“It is with profound sorrow that I announce the passing of Dr. Sonia Nzilani, who was found unresponsive at her home today. Until her untimely demise, Dr. Nzilani served with dedication and distinction as the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Marketing Industry, Culture & Tourism in my administration,” Mutula’s statement read in part.
“Her commitment to public service and her passion for the growth of our county will be deeply missed. She was an accomplished environmentalist and a passionate advocate for tree growing, earning from the public the affectionate nickname “Syomiti” for her unwavering commitment to environmental conservation,” the governor added.
