Ruto narrates an awkward moment with Rachel after MPs talked about their exes

President William Ruto has shared a lighthearted but awkward moment with his wife, First Lady Rachel Ruto, after Members of Parliament brought up the subject of their ex-girlfriends.
Ruto recalled the incident while speaking at the burial ceremony of Kimani Ichung’wah’s father, Isaac Ngugi, on Monday, September 15, 2025.
Ruto’s lighthearted confession
Ruto said he noticed Rachel’s eyes on him when MPs were making comments about their past relationships. Trying to avoid trouble, the president explained that he kept his gaze straight ahead and chose not to react.

“Nimekuja na mke wangu Racheal, maybe unaweza kusimama,” Ruto began, introducing his wife to the gathering by asking her to stand. (“I came with my wife Rachel, maybe you can stand.”)
He continued: “Unajua wakati maneno imesemekana hapa… wakati maneno imesemekana ya ex, nikaona hawa wadosi hapa wanaongea ongea. Wakakua na consultation kubwa hapa.” (“You know when matters of ex-girlfriends were mentioned here, I saw these big men having a serious consultation amongst themselves.”)
The president explained how Rachel gave him a sharp look. “Na mimi nikaona Rachel anajaribu kunitazama, mimi nikakaza macho tu nikaangalia mbele, halafu ni kama alikua ananiuliza hata wewe uko na hii maneno?” (“And I saw Rachel trying to look at me, but I kept my eyes fixed forward. It was as if she was silently asking me, are you also involved in such matters?”)
Humour at a solemn event
Ruto then quickly reassured her, adding: “Lakini Rachel si unajua maneno yangu yote naweka wazi?” (“But Rachel, you know I have always been open with you about everything.”)

His remarks caused laughter at the event, briefly lightening the mood during the burial service. The funeral was held in honour of Ichung’wah’s father, Isaac Ngugi, 105, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
Ruto’s anecdote highlighted his ability to mix humour even in sad moments while also showing a side of his relationship with the First Lady. This encounter gave the public a glimpse of how ordinary marital dynamics, like questions about past relationships, exist even in the highest offices.
