President William Ruto has mourned the death of celebrated gospel musician Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo, describing her as an extraordinary artist whose music inspired millions across the country.

Ruto said Betty’s hit song “11th Hour” was a powerful message that encouraged believers to remain steadfast even in the face of hardship.

We mourn the passing of Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, fondly known as Betty Bayo, an extraordinary gospel artiste whose voice carried hope into the hearts of countless Kenyans. Her breakthrough hit, ‘11th Hour,’ was a powerful anthem of divine turnaround that inspired the faithful and comforted many who sought strength, healing and reassurance in gospel music,” he said.

Ruto hails Betty’s message of resilience

The president praised Betty’s consistency and the positive message in her music, saying she remained true to her ministry throughout her career.

“For over 15 years, Betty lifted spirits through music that spoke of resilience, renewal and steadfast faith in the face of life’s challenges. Her message was consistent, clear, and heartfelt: never give up, no matter the hour, no matter the storm. Her voice may have fallen silent, but her ministry lives on in every heart she touched, every soul she uplifted, and every life she helped steady in difficult moments. Rest in Peace, Betty Bayo,” Ruto stated.

Betty Bayo, known for her inspiring Kikuyu gospel songs, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the Kenyatta National Hospital’s private wing. A family representative speaking on behalf of her husband, Hiram Gitau, confirmed her death at 1:03 pm, saying it came after days of illness. The spokesperson said her passing ended growing speculation about her health.

Betty Bayo rose to fame through her deeply spiritual songs, which resonated with listeners across Kenya. Her lyrics often spoke of endurance, hope, and faith in God’s timing, themes that became her musical identity.
