President William Ruto resumed his Migori County tour on a triumphant note Monday, May 5, 2025, following a dramatic security scare that made national headlines just 24 hours earlier.

In a bold display of confidence, Ruto took to the streets of Rongo without any visible security barrier, addressing a sea of supporters from the sunroof of his SUV — the same posture he had assumed the day before when an airborne shoe came hurtling towards him during a rally in Kuria West.

Monday’s events were a marked contrast to the chaos of Sunday, with the head of state receiving a hero’s welcome as he inspected the ongoing construction of Riosir Market.

The market, which is expected to accommodate over 300 traders, is one of several development projects Ruto is championing in the region.

“We are committed to uniting our nation to create a conducive environment for economic prosperity. This is irrespective of our political affiliations,” Ruto posted on X.

“In Rongo, Migori County, I inspected the construction of the Riosir Market… Later, I addressed the people and traders of Rongo Town; we undertook to reform sugarcane cultivation in the region, turning it into a profitable venture,” he added.

But the calm of Day 2 was in stark contrast to the political storm that erupted on Sunday, when a member of the crowd hurled a shoe at the President during a public address — striking him on the upper body mid-sentence.

The unexpected attack came as Ruto was highlighting his government’s efforts to lower the cost of living.

Tupunguze gharama ya—” he began, before recoiling slightly as the shoe made contact.

Undeterred, he quickly gathered himself and continued speaking, drawing both applause and concern from onlookers.

Footage of the incident quickly went viral, triggering widespread condemnation across the political spectrum.

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris led calls for civility in political discourse, labelling the act cowardly and unacceptable.

Security sources later confirmed that three people were arrested following the incident and are now in police custody.

Ruto’s two-day tour of Migori is seen as part of a broader strategy to cement his administration’s influence in Nyanza, traditionally considered an opposition stronghold.

With development promises and pledges of inclusivity, the President appears determined to woo the region as part of his national unity agenda.

Despite the flying shoe, Ruto’s message and momentum appear undeterred.

The President continues his charm offensive in Migori with renewed vigour, signalling that even airborne protest won’t throw him off course.
