Ruto: Everyone involved in destruction during protests will face consequences

President William Ruto has come out swinging against individuals he accuses of orchestrating recent acts of violence and vandalism during nationwide protests, vowing that the government will track them down regardless of their rank or influence.
Speaking in Simotwo, Elgeyo Marakwet County, during the 9th Edition of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme on Saturday, July 17 ,2025 Ruto declared that the destruction of businesses and public infrastructure in towns such as Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, and Murang’a was not a spontaneous outburst but a well-coordinated assault on peace and order.
“The rule of law must be upheld. Those who destroyed property, whether you’re a common citizen or a political heavyweight we will come after you,” he warned.
The President dismissed suggestions that the impending arrests and prosecutions are politically motivated, maintaining that those responsible for inciting and funding the unrest must face justice.
“Don’t call it persecution. It is what it is,” he said pointedly, adding that police have full constitutional backing to pursue and prosecute the masterminds.
He singled out politicians accused of financing chaos, warning that inciting youth and hiring goons to destroy property will not go unpunished.

“If you sponsor violence, burn businesses, or loot during demonstrations, expect to be held accountable no matter your position,” he said. “And to some politicians, tutakutana na nyinyi. Nimevumilia ya kutosha.”
Ruto also issued a stern appeal to political and religious leaders, urging them to stop manipulating Gen Z youth into acts of lawlessness. He challenged the opposition to offer meaningful policy alternatives instead of fueling division.
“We must ask ourselves as a country is this the Kenya we want?” he posed.
According to the head of state, the government remains committed to protecting lives and property and will not back down in the face of what he termed “selfish leaders using chaos to revive their political careers.”
