Relatives of four family members who were brutally murdered in Kiambaa, Kiambu County were on Thursday night rattled by robbers who were targeting to steal funeral contributions.

The relatives now want the national government to provide them with security over fears more attacks will occur before they can bury their departed kin.

“I was alerted by the security guards at midnight that there were two people who wanted to open the gate. That is when I informed the area chief who called the police,” said Allan Warunge, a brother of the slain head of the Kiambu family.

Warunge said that a security guard had thwarted a break-in by two suspected robbers who were trying to open the gate at night.

He said the family has not been sleeping well over fears robbers would return to the homestead.

Kiambaa police boss, Muchiri Nyaga, said that the thugs wanted to steal the funeral money.

However, at the time there was no money at the home as the finances are being handled by the burial committee.

Lawrence Warunge, a student at a local university, confessed to the murders, telling the police that he killed his father, Nicholas Warunge, his mother Ann Wanjiku, his brother Christian Njenga Njoroge, cousin Maxwell Njenga and farmhand James Kinyanjui Wambaa.

The family members were killed on the night of January 5 in Karura village, Kiambu County.

The university student later showed detectives where he had disposed of the murder weapons and the clothes he wore during the night of the massacre.

He has since been detained alongside his girlfriend to allow police to complete investigations.
