Police seize 497kgs of marijuana in Gilgil
By Mustafa Juma, February 15, 2025Police have seized marijuana weighing 497 Kilogrammes from a homestead in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement shared via social media on Saturday, February 15, 2025, stated that the police officers from Elementaita who were acting on a tip-off from the members of the public stormed the homestead that is located in the Pakawa area and discovered the drug haul packed in 21 gunny bags.
Arrest
The raid led to the arrest of eight persons of interest, including a 50-year-old woman.
“Eight suspects, including a 50-year-old woman, are in custody following the seizure of 497kg of marijuana at a homestead where they were rounded up. Acting on a tip-off from members of the public, police in Elementaita, backed up by their Rift Valley region counterparts, stormed the homestead located at the Pakawa area in Gilgil, therein discovering the drug haul packed in 21 gunny bags,” the DCI stated.
Other persons of interest who were arrested alongside the 50-year-old woman are aged between 22 and 27.
They are being processed for arraignment on Monday, February 17, 2025.
The DCI has identified the persons of interest as Monicah Wanjiru, Nahashon Njoroge, Martin Njoroge, Stephen Kamau, Simon Ndung’u, Maxwell Nduale, Jackson Wanjohi, and John Muthee.
“The woman, Monicah Wanjiru, alongside Nahashon Njoroge, Martin Njoroge, Stephen Kamau, Simon Ndung’u, Maxwell Nduale, Jackson Wanjohi, and John Muthee, aged between 22 and 27, were all arrested and are being processed for arraignment, Monday,” the statement by the DCI read.

Marijuana crackdown
The arrest comes just a month after the police arrested one person of interest and seized 71 kilograms of bhang worth Ksh2.1 million in Mombasa.
The person of interest, identified as 35-year-old Betty Valley Sangara, was arrested following a routine police check at the Likoni Ferry area.
“Police officers at the Ferry Island Lockup have arrested a trafficker and seized bhang valued at Sh2,130,000. This bust resulted from a routine police check, where officers stopped a blue Piaggio tuk-tuk, registration number KTWC 327M, for inspection,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated on Monday, January 20, 2024.
The DCI stated that upon being stopped by the police, the driver of the tuk-tuk fled the scene, leaving his passenger and the bags containing the bhang inside the three-wheeler.
