Former West Pokot Senator and former Information and Communication Minister Samuel Poghisho has launched an attack on the Media Council of Kenya over recent remarks by MCK condemning the media on the LSK president’s reports.

The former ICT Minister made his remarks on Monday, September 8, 2025, during an interview with a local media house, where he called out MCK for condemning media houses whose duty is to report.

On his part, instead of MCK condemning the media, it should have instead condemned the sources of the attack on the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president, Faith Odhiambo, who is now the vice chairperson of the panel of experts on compensation of victims of protests and riots.

“MCK, instead of condemning the sources of the attack, decided to condemn the media itself, and now they are raining on each other. If the media is going to attack the Media Council of Kenya, what are we going to do?” Poghisho said.

Despite facing backlash following her appointment, Poghisio has been rallying behind Faith Odhiambo.

Likewise, Poghisho, while calling out the Media Council of Kenya, firmly described that the Media headlines are reports and that media reports on news and do not generate news, hence the Media Council should have thought through before launching an attack on the Media.

“I think the Media Council should have thought through because the media reports, headlines are reports; they do not generate news, they report news,” he added.

While making his remarks, Poghisho further hinted at a possible fallout between the Media Council and the media; he further called on the president of the Media Council of Kenya to address the matter before it deepens.

“I think that is what the Media Councils should look into. I believe there is going to be a beef between the media and now the Media Council,” he added.

He added, “I would want the President of the Media Council to also address the issue.”

MCK defends the LSK president

Notably, Poghisho’s remarks come just after MCK issued a statement where it condemned what it termed as unwarranted and unjustified media attacks against Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo.

In a statement on Sunday, September 7, 2025, MCK said the criticism directed at Odhiambo for accepting the appointment was in bad faith.

The council praised the media’s role in defending democracy and truth but called out what it described as a perplexing and hypocritical move to vilify the LSK boss.

“It is profoundly perplexing and hypocritical that some sections of the media have chosen to vilify Ms. Odhiambo for accepting a role to serve the public. When an institution like the LSK criticises government actions but declines an invitation to help address them, it risks becoming a rebel without a cause.

“By insisting the LSK president reject the appointment, these outlets are limiting the LSK to pure criticism, ignoring its vital potential to improve governance from within,” the council said.

MCK noted that while the media has a duty to hold leaders accountable, it must avoid attacks that risk eroding trust in institutions.
