Detectives on Tuesday shot dead a suspected gangster whom officers had been tracking after he allegedly snatched a Ceska pistol from a police officer and shot at him.
The suspect identified as Osman Suleiman alias Masudi, was cornered in Kayole, Nairobi. Another person, suspected to have been involved in the gun drama, was shot dead at Mwengenya Bridge in Saika, Nairobi.
According to the police report seen by Mediamax Digital, Suleiman is believed to have been the robber who snatched the gun from a police officer at Bee Centre before fleeing to Majengo slums.
Suleiman was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle and is said to have snatched and pulled the trigger aiming to shot the police officer from whom he stole the gun.
The suspect missed the officer and the bullet hit a bystander, Willy Mwikya Nzuki, who was taken to Mama Lucy Hospital for treatment.
The pistol is said to have been snatched from Corporal John Mbae, who at the time was in the company of two other officers, constable Geoffrey Mwangi and Constable Lolem Aisha, all of them attached to Umoja Police Station.
The officers said that commotion arose when they asked a gang of youth to disperse from the Bee Centre Roundabout.
“The thug shot at the officer using the same pistol but unfortunately the stray bullet hit a member of the public on the neck,” police said.
Suleiman, the main suspect was identified after police officers went through CCTV footage that captured the event as it unfolded and quickly began to trail him.
